Community Asset Building Process
Foresters’ Community Asset Building program is centred on ownership of physical assets (usually property) by incorporated community groups and associations. Ownership of assets means community and non-profit organisations can build financial independence, leverage greater community benefits and develop capacity to build a sustainable long-term future, reducing overall dependence on external sources of income.
Building the assets of non-profit organisations provides opportunities for wealth redistribution and for non-profit organisations to be engaged in non-funded, socially innovative work. Further, instead of grant monies being paid to private landlords in rent, it can be used to build the assets of the community.
Phase One: Appraising Organisational Capacity
Phase one in the Asset Building process is appraising the capacity and capability of your non-profit organisation. Whilst self-assessment is important and should be done prior to any formal appraisal, it may also prove beneficial to seek the assistance of an external advisor.
The appraisal of the non-profit organisation will focus on a review of the organisation’s position in terms of its performance in the six key indicators:
Governance
- Strategy and Planning
- Financial Management
- Policies and Procedures
- Place and Space
